Model Project Southeast
In Erfurt’s largest current urban development project, the city is working together with its citizens to shape the southeast. By 2026, numerous construction measures are intended to make the district more liveable: social facilities, sports and leisure areas, green spaces, streets, and paths are being remodelled in a sustainable way.
Background information:
The project is made possible through funding from the federal, state and city government. In the programme “Modellvorhaben zur Weiterentwicklung der Städtebauförderung“ (Model Projects for the Further Development of Urban Development Funding), 50 million euros have been allocated to Erfurt until 2026. Erfurt is one of seven German cities where extensive neighbourhood development measures are being promoted. The model projects aim to develop exemplary modernization and adaptation strategies for climate-friendly transformation, infrastructure for new forms of mobility, densification, and the coexistence of sports, housing, leisure, and commerce, as well as social cohesion.
What are the goals of the project?
The construction measures are intended to enhance the liveability of the southeast. Pathways will be improved, making mobility easier for people, and public green spaces will be enriched with new functions and qualities. In this process, the existing large residential estates and the historical village location of Melchendorf will be more closely connected. Currently, the districts are separated by traffic routes, topography, and buildings. The connection to the overall city will also be improved, as the southeast gains new qualities, a „New Center“, and an advantage in climate adaptation and mobility.
